Angela Bingham - vocals
Keith Waters - piano
Angela Bingham has been a singer her entire life. Her singing is characterized by the qualities of honest expression, solid swinging and an emphasis on the blues. With a clear, steady tone and a penchant for improvisation, "She phrases conversationally, making the lyrics her own and creating the impression that she's speaking her mind and heart directly to you, as if the two of you were conversing over cocktails or an intimate supper - without sacrificing any of a song's musical interest. When Angela steps onto the stage, the instrumentalists respond with the same genuine enthusiasm and respect with which they would greet a bad-ass horn player." (David R. Halliday, 20 year west coast veteran of jazz radio DJ) Angela is steeped in the tradition of the great jazz vocalists and pulls material from both the Great American Songbook as well as more modern singer/songwriters.
Pianist Keith Waters has performed with James Moody, Eddie Harris, Bobby Hutcherson, Sheila Jordan, and Chris Connor, and has recorded and performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Russia. He recently recorded the CD Night Songs with guitarist Scott Sawyer. His recording, Carolina Tracks (2012), assembles North Carolina’s top jazz musicians; its proceeds were in support of the North Carolina Jazz Scholarship. Keith is on faculty at University of Colorado, Boulder and has written highly acclaimed books including The Studio Recordings of the Miles Davis Quintet 1965-68, published by Oxford University Press in 2011 and Postbop Jazz in the 1960's: The Compositions of Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, 2019.
Art of the Duo will explore piano songs meant to be sung, from Fats Waller to Chick Corea.
