PAUL SHAPIRO’S RIBS & BRISKET
Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket has been performing internationally since the release of Essen (Eat in Yiddish) on Tzadik Records. Featuring two of New York’s finest vocalists Cilla Owens and Eleanor Reissa and Shapiro on sax, they blow Yiddish, jazz and blues standing where the Borscht Belt meets 52nd Street.
Shapiro, viewing The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, recognized music in the soundtrack that his band was already performing. The idea of Ribs & Brisket Plays the Music of Mrs. Maisel was born and some great classics were added to their already eclectic, humorous and virtuosic repertoire.
From Slim Gaillard’s Dunkin’ Bagel and the Jewish cowboy classic The Ballad of Irving, on to the Barry Sisters, Blossom Dearie and Ella Fitzgerald, the ensemble swings hard and the two singers rock the mic.
Kirk Silsbee writes …the band plays like a juke joint combo used to dodging beer bottles and bullets. Shapiro's nasty tenor sax breaks would have qualified him for duty at Duffy's Gaieties on Cahuenga Boulevard, when Lenny Bruce emceed for the peelers in the '50s.
The New Yorker notes …a heaping platter of rhythm and blues and jazz served with a schmear of classic Yiddish culture is the special of the day for this joyful outfit, led by the exuberant saxophonist Shapiro.
In Straight No Chaser UK …hard blowing, finger-snapping, klezmer-inflected jazz and wailing big city blues that suddenly slips into Yiddish.
Time Out New York …reedist-vocalist Paul Shapiro stirs klezmer, swing, R&B and other hearty sounds into his Ribs and Brisket Revue, seasoning it all with a potent Yiddish tinge. Time Out New York
The New York Times …transforms the ritual of a Friday night Shabbat service into a rollicking downtown jam.
