Sinergia

Sinergia brings together three artists from the DC Brazilian music scene. We strive to find great Brazilian songs that are rarely, if ever, performed in the U.S., along with bossa/samba classics and occasional adaptations of American tunes we all know and love! Tatiana Claro (vocals) (“Tati”) was born in Rio de Janeiro where she grew up immersed in the rich sounds and rhythms of Bossa Nova, Samba, and MPB as well as Brazilian and American Rock and popular music. She came to the U.S. in 2003 to attend graduate school and was inspired by the multi-cultural environment and all the opportunities to experience international music. In 2019, Tati decided to dive into her lifelong passion—singing! Her joy for life and love for music and dancing comes across through her interpretations of Brazilian songs and standards of the Great American Songbook. She loves to share her joy of music and Brazilian culture with whoever is willing to listen. Tati has performed as a featured vocalist and guest singer at local restaurants and jazz clubs such as Mr. Henry's, El Golfo, That's Amore, Normandie Farm, and Urban Winery. Tom Rohde (guitar) is an American classical guitarist and musicologist who specializes in Brazilian music and culture. He has toured throughout Brazil, Taiwan, and the United States and he has performed with the New World Symphony, the New Bedford Symphony, and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and at venues such as the 92nd Street Y in New York City, the Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. While living in Boston he was a member of the New World Guitar Trio, with whom he recorded the CD, Exiled, and he also performed with the Brazilian group Choro Democrático. Tom frequently performs with samba, choro, pagode, and Brazilian jazz groups and musicians in the Washington D.C. area. He earned a Ph.D. in musicology with a minor in Latin American music from Catholic University, a Master’s degree in music from the New England Conservatory, and a Bachelor’s degree from Ithaca College, and he currently teaches music history and world music courses at Stevenson University and Catholic University. Rob Orwin (keyboard, sax) earned a composition degree from Chicago Musical College, later studying jazz piano with DC’s own Wayne Wilentz and saxophone with renowned saxophonist Jeff Antoniuk. He composed and produced works in various genres before co-founding the Brazilian jazz quintet Travessia in 2001. He has since covered keys and winds for the neo-soul group DownTyme and piano for the Bob Schwartz Quartet, appearing on their Wammy-nominated CD, “Look for the Silver Lining.” In 2014 he co-founded Batida Diferente, a quartet fusing Brazilian and American influences in a unique blend of jazz and pop originals and covers, whose eponymous double CD won an Honorable Mention in Best DC Jazz Albums of 2021 from CapitalBop. He currently covers keys for the Saven Laven Jones Quartet and is excited to be launching this new adventure with Sinergia. Rob has performed at Blues Alley, Twins Jazz, Mr. Henry’s, JoJo’s, Columbia Station, Bistro Lepic, and other DC-area venues, as well as numerous private venues and benefits.
