Usher in the Holiday Season at Blues Alley with the John Lamkin Favorites Jazz Quintet as they bring you a Taste of their Holiday Favorites along with music from their recent CD “Movin’.”
Formally the Director of Bands and the coordinator of Music and Music Education at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Dr. John R. Lamkin II, is not only a professional educator, but he is also a professional trumpet player who has performed with Stephanie Mills, Maurice Hines, Frank Foster, Cyrus Chestnut, Harvey Mason, Warren Wolf, Ralph Peterson, Gary Thomas, Paul Carr, Charlie Covington, the Hank Levy Legacy Orchestra, and many others.
Lamkin received the "2014 Jazz Heroes Award" from the Jazz Journalist Association for having a significant impact on jazz music in the Baltimore community, and in 2018 he received the “Giants Among Us Award” from Quincy Phillips and Brian Davis for “Significant Contributions to the Music Landscape in Baltimore, MD
He has produced three recordings, “Hot” in 1984, “Transitions,” in 2018, and “Movin’,” in 2024. Of the twenty-five songs that comprise the three recordings, Lamkin has written all but five.
Currently he teaches trumpet privately and is a trumpet and horn coach at Maree Farring Elementary/Middle School. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he leads and performs with his traditional post hard-bop group he calls the “Favorites Jazz Quintet.”
