Featured in New York Concert Review, Chicago WFMT, Hong Kong Sing Tao Daily, Chautauqua Daily, Chinese Harbin Daily, and many others for her expressive piano performance, Dr. Jiao Sun was born in Harbin, China. She nationally won the first prize to be admitted to Beijing Central Conservatory of Music at age 9 before her solo debut with orchestra at age 11. Sun won top prizes at the Washington International Piano Competition, Memphis International Orchestra Repertory Competition, Ohio “Tuesday” Scholarship Competition, Cincinnati Conservatory Concerto Competition, two New York Chautauqua Piano Competitions, “A Step Towards Mastery” Russian International Piano Competition, Chinese Golden Bell National Competition for Young Musicians. She has performed extensively in North America, Asia, and in Europe.
Sun has appeared as a guest artist or soloist with major concert series and orchestras worldwide. She has performed with renowned artists such as Toke Moldrup, Vincent and Gabriell DiMartino, Patricia Alexander (Renee Fleming’s mother).
Dr. Sun has judged several international competitions, has guest lectured and conducted masterclasses at several universities. She presented at many national and regional pedagogy conferences, including twice at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, and Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Symposium.
She became adjunct piano faculty and collaborative artist in residence at Ohio University School of Music in 2021 and is a Master Teacher of Piano at Athens Community Music Schoolm teaching pre-college students. She holds a Doctoral of Musical Arts degree in piano performance and an Artist Diploma at University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where she won the Graduate Excellence in Teaching Award as head of graduate teaching assistant, twice winning Dorothy Stolzenbach Payne Scholarships; she earned a minor in piano pedagogy with Michelle Conda. Sun gained a Master of Music degree in piano performance and literature and a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance at the Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester.
