Bob Schwartz grew up in New York, started flute at age 8, added sax, and came of age as the Thad Jones – Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra was starting up at the Village Vanguard. After a college career with friends who became top jazz pros, Bob came to DC to join the Justice Dept., but 15 years ago formed his own band BSQ (Bob Schwartz Quartet), earned residencies at jazz clubs and restaurants, and plays events at major hotels and clubs. Several BSQ alumni have gone on to form their own successful groups. Overall, about 50 area musicians, from high-schoolers who are now touring pros to established area professionals, have played or sung in this “quartet.” BSQ’s two CDs are ‘T’ain’t What’cha Do and Look for the Silver Lining.
Joe Brotherton, after a career in top military bands, has been hailed as one of DC’s finest horn players, with an appreciation of traditional, post-bop, and current jazz idioms. Critic Mike West recently observed that Joe is so versatile and in-demand as a performer and teacher that we tend to overlook what an extraordinary player he is.
Tony Martucci has been featured with major jazz artists including Mose Allison, Gary Burton, Charlie Byrd, Eddie Daniels, Joe Henderson, Lee Konitz, Joe Lovano, James Moody, Sonny Stitt, and many more. (And is featured on conga on BSQ’s Silver Lining CD.) Now spending more time in his native Pittsburgh and teaching at VCU, it’s a treat when Tony comes back to DC to play.
