The JoGo Project

On Weekend Two, Annapolis Jazz & Roots is thrilled to blast off with The JoGo Project, a WAMMIE Award-winning Jazz and Go-Go band originating in Washington, D.C. They'll perform at the historic Peerless Rens Club in Eastport. Founded in 2014 by saxophonist Elijah Jamal Balbed, the band emerged from Balbed's experience performing with the legendary Chuck Brown, the Godfather of Go-Go, during the final year of Brown's life. A few years later, Balbed entered the Artist-in-Residence program at Strathmore and decided it was time to start a band to continue Chuck's legacy and bring his Jazz and Go-Go worlds together. This unique ensemble blends the two quintessential DC musical styles, creating an innovative sound deeply rooted in the region's musical heritage.

In the past decade, Balbed has gained an international reputation as a jazz artist and The JoGo Project has become a prominent force in the music community. Balbed's impressive resume includes winning the 2020 DC Jazz Prix Competition and being named Best Tenor Saxophonist and Best New Jazz Musician by the Washington City Paper. His has worked with a wide range of acclaimed artists in multiple genres including Fantasia, Patti Austin, and Angelique Kidjo.

The JoGo Project's influence extends far beyond their home region. In 2018, they made history as the first go-go band to perform in Russia during a cultural diplomacy tour sponsored by the U.S. State Department. Their international performances have taken them to Japan, the UK and Qatar, showcasing the universal appeal of their unique jazz and go-go fusion.

At the Annapolis Jazz and Roots Festival, attendees can look forward to an electrifying setlist featuring iconic tracks such as "Rise" by Herb Alpert, "Creepin'" by Stevie Wonder, "Summer Love" by The Blackbyrds, and "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience The JoGo Project's dynamic performance, where they artfully merge two traditions  to create a modern sound.
