Playing their most delicious songs. Perhaps some tummling. The pool will not be open that night but the lights on the shuffleboard court have been fixed. Tomorrow's soup is borscht. So is the next day’s.
Paul Shapiro’s Ribs & Brisket has been performing internationally since the release of Essen (eat in Yiddish) on Tzadik Records.
Featuring two of New York’s finest vocalists Cilla Owens and Eleanor Reissa and Shapiro on sax, they plant their feet where the Borscht Belt meets 52nd Street blowing Yiddish, jazz and blues.
With Jerry Korman on piano, Dave Hofstra on bass and Tony Lewis on drums.
Cilla and Eleanor delight audiences with their vocal talent and their interpretations. Eleanor swings Blossom Dearie’s The Gentleman is a Dope and Cilla kicks Dinah Washington’s TV is the Thing this Year. Together they rock the classic Barry Sisters’ Coney Island. Shapiro’s sax burns on his Louis Prima inspired To Life, and he croons 1966, singing an updated Would You Believe It. The rhythm section cooks like crazy.
The New Yorker writes that Ribs & Brisket is …a heaping platter of rhythm and blues and jazz served with a schmear of classic Yiddish culture is the special of the day for this joyful outfit, led by the exuberant saxophonist Shapiro.
Straight No Chaser UK …hard blowing, finger-snapping, klezmer-inflected jazz and wailing big city blues that suddenly slips into Yiddish.
Doors at 9. Show at 9:30pm.
