Actors Improv Theater’s Word Jazz returns to Sharp Nine. Inspired by Ken Nordine’s eponymous 1957 album, Word Jazz is comprised of scenes based on improvised monologues and live music by a quartet. Spontaneous songs and even standards also figure into the mix, all initiated by audience suggestions.
Actors Improv, formerly known as Transactors, is the longest-running improvisational theater in the South. Founded in Carrboro in 1983, the company has traveled far and wide to perform and teach at festivals, theaters, and schools. If you laugh they’re doing comedy; if you don’t they’re doing drama.
The band is Rob Ladd (drums), Robbie Link (bass), musical director Glenn Mehrbach (piano), and Scott Sawyer (guitar). Hailey Brown, Juliet Kaplan, Dana Marks, and Steve Scott join director Greg Hohn in the cast.
