Margo - A Woman in Berlin (new show!)
Who is Margo?
- Margo, that is the synonym for women in Berlin in the Roaring 1920s and early 30s; Margo is a vamp at the TingelTangel; she is the woman behind the mask. She is also the sophisticated seduction and temptation of those men who rule the world. But Margo is also the delicate, insecure girl whose husband returns severely physically wounded and shell shocked from the “Great War”. She is a lesbian who - at the prestigious Eldorado - is searching for true love and the pleasures for one night. She is also a whore who is desperately trying to get her children through the Great Depression. Margo is also the simple woman next door who fights for her rights, a suffragette fighting for Women’s Rights or and the right to abort.
Chanteuse Internationale Adrienne Haan, who has lived in New York since 1997, vividly explores the musical cabaret repertoire of that era emphasized by her virtuoso voice and great acting skills. She portrays Margo in this excitingly erotic and political soirée noir; the different types of women in Berlin during the Weimar Republic, tells their stories about their failures and successes, their desire for (sexual) freedom and the longing for acceptance in politics and society. Margo is a story of love, loss and disappointment, a dance on the volcano between the two world wars.
Berlin; yes, that is the wild, wicked, feverishly crazy metropolis of the short-lived Weimar Republic, whose appeal continues to radiate fascination to this day. Marlene Dietrich, Friedrich Hollaender, Kurt Weill, Mischa Spoliansky, Bertolt Brecht, Hans Eisler, Kurt Tucholsky, they all flare up again when Adrienne Haan leads the audience through a musical journey of Berlin’s Roaring 20s, accompanied by her long-time music director Richard Danley on the piano.
The artist weaves the threads between feminist struggle and female glamor and takes the audience on an exciting musical journey through history.
This soirée is also an important warning that almost 100 years after the fall of the Weimar Republic, the world is once again facing similar threats today.
