Trumpeter, composer and educator Charmaine Michelle Nokuri walks in the tradition of Miles Davis while bringing her own style of cool jazz to the band stand. Raised in Northern Virginia, she studied jazz at the prestigious Peabody Conservatory, as a recipient of the Noble Levi Jolly Sr. Jazz Scholarship. She has played with the The Go Go Symphony, New World Jazz Orchestra, DMV Women's Jazz Society, Grammy Award nominated Vocalist Carolyn Malachi, Artists against War, Shannon Gunn and the Bullets, The Fruition Experience, Musicians of Mercy and recently released her own EP "Love Takes Time" which is now playing on radio stations.
We are proud to announce that Angeleisha L. Rodgers has been named the new artistic director for the Nokuri Arts Society. Angeleisha L. Rodgers is rapidly making her mark as one of today’s most sought after trumpet players in New York City.
A native of Virginia, she received her undergraduate degree Virginia State University, where she performed with the school’s world-renowned Virginia State University Gospel Chorale. She earned a Master of Music degree from North Carolina Central in Jazz Studies with an emphasis in Musicology. Her thesis – which explores the life , Clora Bryant, a prodigy of Dizzy Gillespie– won the Eileen Southern Research Grant from the American Musicological Society.
