JJ At 100

Celebrating the legacy of Indianapolis native, trombone and composing legend JJ Johnson. The Indianapolis Jazz Collective, curated by saxophonist and Indy Jazz Fest Artistic Director Rob Dixon and a cast of Indianapolis based all-stars.

When thinking about modern trombonists that came through the "School of JJ" we couldn't think of one more fitting than the great Steve Turre. He was passed the jazz torch early in his career by some of the music's greatest masters – Art Blakey, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Woody Shaw and Ray Charles, among others. Either with his own touring band or as resident trombonist with the Saturday Night Live band, Turre is a consummate keeper of the "jazz torch."
